Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture toward Fans
The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he claims was an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a recent game at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty easily payable for the billionaire owner.

This event follows a controversial offseason for Jones, who faced widespread criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
